When kids in foster care turn 18, the system says they “age out.” What that really means is they’re suddenly on their own no family to lean on, no stable housing waiting for them. Too many walk out of the system straight into homelessness or unsafe living situations. For many, it feels like being pushed into deep water without a life jacket.
The Hard Reality
Each year, around 19,000 young people age out of foster care in the U.S.
Within just 4 years, about 1 in 4 will experience homelessness.
Many face it even sooner — between 11% and 36% become homeless in their very first year out of care.
The lack of stable, safe housing is one of the biggest reasons foster youth struggle to find their footing in adulthood. Even with ambition, many never get the chance to stand on their own two feet because they don’t have a place to start from.
What The Promised Home Does
The Promised Home is designed to change that. Our goal is to take vacant apartment complexes in safe areas, flip them, and turn them into sustainable, affordable housing for youth aging out of care.
Foster youth will be able to rent out studios or one-bedroom apartments at an affordable rate.
The Promised Fund ties directly into this program by contributing to their rent, giving them a safety net while they learn independence.
Instead of scrambling to survive, these young adults can focus on building their future whether that’s working, going to school, or pursuing career training.
This program doesn’t just provide a roof over their heads. It creates a foundation of stability that makes everything else possible. With a safe home, foster youth can build credit, hold steady jobs, attend classes, and begin their adult lives with dignity.
Where Donations Go
Every donation to The Promised Home goes directly toward:
Purchasing and flipping apartment complexes in safe communities
Renovating and restoring units to create affordable, livable spaces
Covering partial rent support through the Promised Fund so no young adult is left without options
Maintaining properties to ensure they remain safe, sustainable, and supportive environments
The Big Picture
The Promised Home and The Promised Fund work hand-in-hand. The Fund provides the financial education and trust savings; the Home provides the physical stability. Together, they give foster youth what they need most when they step into adulthood: a safe place to live, real financial support, and a chance to succeed.
Because no young person should age out of foster care into homelessness. With your support, they won’t.
